My first visit to Apoyo in February – I was pleasantly surprised that with the dry season and the thinning of the vegetation the birds and monkeys are much more visible. I was glad to see several families of howlers passing through the trees near my villa. A group of them even slept in the trees right outside my bedroom! Also got my best view yet of the Guardabarranco.
The Apoyo Resort is centrally located for a variety of excursions. I traveled north to Esteli, Quibuto and Palacaguina for a couple of days visiting small farmer cooperatives growing organic fair-trade coffee. Nicaragua is home to a number of these democratically organized small farmer cooperatives and I was impressed with the way they pay producers a guaranteed minimum price that provides a stable source of income and improved access to education and social services for their families. Fundacio’n Entre Mujeres is an all-woman cooperative. I bought ten bags of their organic coffee and it is some of the best I have ever tasted.
