A hiking trail map is a good thing. The wise folks at Marena, or perhaps the Alcaldia of Catarina has been kind enough to produce a map that illustrates the five hiking trail out of the Laguna to the rim above, all of which are accessible from ApoyoResort. I’ve been up #1 and #2.
The first is accessed by following a gravel road from the Resort in a counterclockwise direction about two miles. At that point one encounters a two track block road used by the occasional automobile that descends from the town above, Diria.
The town is named after the Chorutega chief who defied the Spanish. This hike is a steady ascent, mostly in the shade.
The final 500 yards is blessed with fresh breezes and spectacular views of the valleys on the south side of the crater. It has always delighted me to see how different the crater looks from different perspectives.
On reaching the top, one finds a small park and several Miradors serving meals and refreshments. Most of these open at noon.
The total round-trip from Apoyo Resort is seven miles with 1200 feet of vertical gain. By all means, bring at least two bottles of water.
